Timebanking for individuals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


ISN\u2019T <\/strong>TIMEBANKING <\/strong>THE SAME AS VOLUNTEERING?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Yes and no! Technically speaking, timebanking is reciprocal informal volunteering, where each member can offer skills and time, and request skills and time from other people in return. Timebanking is flexible and enables people to dip in and out as much as they like, donating their time as they wish. It works around your own lifestyle and existing commitments, and there are no obligations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IF I DON\u2019T HAVE ANY \u2018SKILLS\u2019 TO SHARE?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Everyone has something to offer \u2013 even the simplest of tasks can have a positive impact on someone\u2019s life. Everyday activities such as chatting to someone, playing cards, reading aloud, picking up shopping, walking a dog or doing some ironing can make a real difference.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IF I DON\u2019T HAVE MUCH TIME TO GIVE?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The beauty of timebanking compared with traditional volunteering is that it\u2019s completely flexible: you only offer your time when you can and want to offer it. You could offer just one hour per week, per month, or even per year! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW DO I GET OR GIVE TIME?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Join your local time bank for FREE. If there isn\u2019t one, why not start your own? Either way, check out our joining pages to get started. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IF I DON\u2019T WANT ANYTHING BACK?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Timebanking works best when members are both giving and receiving time. Ours is a reciprocal model, which means it\u2019s based upon sharing<\/em> time \u2013 and being able to share their skill can help some of our more isolated members develop a real sense of self-worth. However, if you really don\u2019t want to spend your time credits, you can donate them to another time bank member or the community pot, so that someone else in the time bank can benefit from them.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAN I GIVE MY HOURS TO SOMEONE ELSE? <\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you\u2019re free to give your hours to a friend or family member, or you could give them to the time bank for the community pot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>S A COMMUNITY POT?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Many time banks have a community pot, which allows members to\u00a0donate\u00a0their time credits for others to use. For example,\u00a0if\u00a0someone has just come out of hospital, they may\u00a0need\u00a0more support\u00a0for a period of time but\u00a0may not have many\u00a0time bank credits\u00a0to spend.\u00a0The community pot\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0be used to help people\u00a0or organizations\u00a0who are not time bank members\u00a0but who would benefit from\u00a0informal community support. They may later decide to join the time bank, giving them an opportunity to \u2018give back\u2019\u00a0their own skills to help others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WILL TIMEBANKING <\/strong>AFFECT MY BENEFIT<\/strong> CLAIMS<\/strong>?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The short answer is \u2018no\u2019. If you\u2019re claiming Universal Credit or other benefits that require you to look for work for 35 hours a week, timebanking may even count towards your jobseeking hours \u2013 but make sure you speak to your work coach about it first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO I NEED MONEY TO ACCESS <\/strong>A<\/strong> T<\/strong>IME <\/strong>B<\/strong>ANK?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Timebanking is FREE for members, but if you\u2019re requesting a service, you might be expected to supply any materials unless you make arrangements with your exchange partner beforehand. For example, if you want someone to paint a door, you\u2019ll need to supply the paint, brush and protective sheet \u2013 or give your exchange partner the money to buy them for you. Time banks often have a bank of donated materials, so it\u2019s worth checking before you buy anything. Group activities run by time banks such as a knitting circle are free, but you may be expected to bring your own wool and needles \u2013 check beforehand to be sure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IS <\/strong>TIMEBANKING<\/strong> SAFE?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The safety of all members is our top priority and each time bank will follow agreed policies and procedures, and have sensible safety measures in place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Local time bank members will meet prospective new members in person before they join  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • All new members will be invited to participate in group activities and events before they begin to offer one\u2013to\u2013one exchanges <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Time banks will risk\u2013assess activities carried out by members <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Each member must agree to and sign a code of conduct. If they breach this, they may be asked to leave the time bank <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Each time bank has a complaints system in place <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Time banks should have public liability insurance <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Personal information is never passed on without the permission of the member <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • All personal data is secure and can only be accessed by the time bank brokers or coordinators <\/li>\n\n\n\n
